Mulago National Referral Hospital has reported a sharp rise in specialised surgeries over the last two years, citing major gains in complex and technology-driven care.

The hospital said the progress was achieved under its surgical services department as part of efforts to expand access to advanced treatment. The update was shared on X.

In the period under review, the hospital carried out five kidney transplants and 1,498 neurosurgeries, including skull reconstruction and base-of-the-skull procedures.

It also completed 1,557 specialised orthopaedic surgeries, such as spine operations and total hip and knee replacements. A total of 130 plastic and reconstructive surgeries were performed.

Paediatric surgeons handled 406 cases, including the separation of conjoined twins and laparoscopic oesophageal procedures. The hospital also conducted 278 endocrine surgeries.

Oral and maxillofacial teams carried out 257 procedures, including jaw reconstruction and major tumour and trauma surgeries. There were 927 gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries, including thyroidectomy cases.

The hospital further reported 54 cardiothoracic surgeries and 284 urology procedures. Eye specialists performed 1,038 ocular surgeries, while ear, nose and throat surgeons handled 55 cases.

Mulago also highlighted growth in advanced procedures. These included 82 laparoscopic surgeries, 19 arthroscopy surgeries, 390 laser procedures and 11 endoscopic interventions.

The hospital said the numbers reflect its growing capacity to deliver specialised care using modern medical technology.
