The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division dominated the inaugural Fort Portal City Marathon, winning top positions and highlighting the power of civil-military cooperation in advancing peace and tourism in the Tooro region.

Held over the weekend in Fort Portal City, the marathon attracted hundreds of runners competing in 5km, 10km, 20km, and 42km races. The UPDF fielded participants across all categories and dominated the event, winning the 42km and 5km races.

His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro graced the event, which is set to become an annual fixture every third weekend of July. Organisers hope the marathon will help position Fort Portal and the wider Tooro region as a premier tourism destination.

“This event is about showcasing the vibrancy of Fort Portal as a top tourism destination,” said lead organiser Stephen Mugabi.

Speaking on behalf of the Division Commander Brigadier General Paul Muwonge, Colonel Sseguya, the Division’s Operations and Training Officer, addressed participants at the Fort Portal Boma Grounds. He said the peace in the Rwenzori region has enabled such vibrant community events to thrive.

He also stressed the importance of physical fitness, both in the military and among civilians, noting that health and unity were key messages of the marathon. “This marathon promotes not just health but unity between the military and civilians. In the Army, we call this CIMIC – Civil-Military Cooperation. We come together, share, and socialise. Indeed, sports is fun all through,” Col Sseguya added.

The event drew participation from local companies and institutions, which used the platform to exhibit products and connect with the public.
