A high-level delegation from Mogadishu has visited Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops in Barawe to coordinate security ahead of upcoming national elections.
The State Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Amb Ilyaas Sheikh Omar, led the officials to the Battle Group 45 headquarters. He lauded the personnel serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) for maintaining regional stability. Amb Ilyaas noted that the collaboration between international peacekeepers and the Somali National Army remains the backbone of peace in the sub-sector.
“Thank you for making the region peaceful. You should not get tired because you are doing a great job,” Amb Ilyaas stated.
The Minister urged local residents to cooperate with security agencies to protect recent gains. He emphasized that the prevailing calm should allow citizens to engage in trade and social activities without fear. Amb Ilyaas specifically warned against actions that might undermine the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

Battle Group 45 Commander, Col Justus Musenene, reaffirmed the UPDF’s dedication to protecting civilians and their assets. He welcomed the delegation’s direct engagement with the community on matters of national importance.
“It is our mandate to ensure the security of people and their property,” Col Musenene asserted.

Barawe District Commissioner, Umaru Abdulahi Mahammad, praised the professional conduct of the Ugandan troops. He highlighted the success of various Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives that have improved local welfare. Col Abdurahuman Elmi, the 06 Brigade Commander, added that unity among all stakeholders is the only path to lasting peace.
The visiting team included the Lower Shabelle Governor, several State Ministers, and representatives from the Women’s Association. Their visit signals a unified front between the Somali government and AUSSOM forces as the country prepares for its next political milestone.
