Wendi Rewards Everyday Spenders with Weekly Prizes

Pearl Bank has taken its push for digital payments to Kampala’s Old Taxi Park, offering weekly prizes to customers who transact more than Shs 10,000 through its Wendi mobile wallet.

The campaign, dubbed “Wendi Ku Win”, targets everyday payments such as fuel purchases, bills and money transfers. The bank launched it in partnership with the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation.

Customers stand a chance to win fuel vouchers worth Shs 30,000, Shs 50,000 and Shs 100,000. Other prizes include smartphones, microwaves, blenders and cash rewards of Shs 100,000.

The taxi park launch places the campaign within reach of transport workers, traders and passengers who make daily payments.

Wendi allows users to save, send and manage money without a bank account or smartphone, according to Pearl Bank. Customers can access the service through *229# or download the app.

Pearl Bank executive director Andrew Kabeera said the campaign seeks to attract new users and encourage existing customers to use the wallet for routine transactions.

He said customers could use Wendi to buy fuel, pay merchants, settle bills, transfer money and save. The platform also supports government payments and Western Union transfers, according to the bank.

Kabeera described these services as a route to bringing more Ugandans into the digital economy.

The campaign combines prize draws with a savings offer. Pearl Bank says Wendi offers savings plans with annual interest of 12.5 per cent.

The wallet also includes a Sacco management system that allows groups to save and track their funds digitally.

For customers, the offer creates an incentive to move some everyday payments onto the wallet. However, a qualifying transaction provides a chance to enter the weekly draw; it does not guarantee a prize.

The supplied campaign announcement does not state when the promotion ends or how many winners the bank will select each week.

Kabeera urged customers to access Wendi through their phones and use its payment and savings services.
