The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has won a Shs77 billion case filed against it by REN Publishers Ltd and Multiplex Limited at the arbitral tribunal.

REN Publishers and Multiplex Limited accused UNBS of breaching a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2014 for the supply of electronic tags to UNBS-certified companies.

In its defence, UNBS argued that it met all its obligations, but REN Publishers and Multiplex Limited failed to roll out the project as agreed.

A three-member arbitration panel, in a decision delivered on January 31, 2025, ruled that UNBS had fulfilled its responsibilities, while REN Publishers and Multiplex Limited had not implemented the project. The tribunal dismissed the claim.

UNBS Executive Director, Eng. James Kasigwa, expressed gratitude to the UNBS team for their dedication and long hours of work, which contributed to the victory.

“Your collective efforts have not only secured this significant win but also reinforced UNBS's reputation,” he said.

He also acknowledged the judges, experts, and members of the arbitration and dispute resolution team for their diligence in upholding justice.

UNBS remains committed to protecting consumers, promoting fair trade, enforcing standards, ensuring precision in industry through reliable measurement systems, and enhancing the competitiveness of locally made products in domestic, regional, and international markets.
