Two arrested in shooting of Western Uganda Youth MP aspirant
Police on Tuesday arrested two suspects in connection to the murder of Saturday Ivan Bimanyirwoha who was traveling with Simon Katuramu, one of the candidates in the race to represent youths in western Uganda in parliament.
Katuramu, who was shot in the abdomen, is nursing injuries at Mbarara Hospital.
Rwizi Region Police Spokesman Samson Kasasira says Simon Katuramu's health is getting better.
The suspects are Corporal John Davis Osoda, a counter-terrorism police officer attached to Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and Patrick Robert Mutabazi, a driver with UNRA.
They are currently being held at Mbarara Central Police Station.
On the fateful night, Katuramu, also a lecturer at Metropolitan International University, was traveling with three others in a lorry carrying iron sheets.
But when police officers stopped them, they objected. The suspects then shot at the lorry, shattering Bimanyirwoha's head and another bullet hit Katuramu in the side.
The incident occurred along Mbarara-Ntungamo Road (Bypass). The other two occupants -- the lorry driver and his turn man -- are still missing, according to police.
Pictures released by police show the 26-year-old Katuramu being visited by colleagues.
