The Ministry of Education and Sports has postponed the reopening of all schools and education institutions to February 10, 2026, citing the need to ensure learners’ safety during the general elections.

In a statement, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, said the earlier plan to reopen schools on February 2 had been revised.

“Due to the General Elections and to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday February 10, 2026,” Dr Turyagyenda said.

She clarified that the directive applies to all institutions, including international schools, tertiary institutions and universities.

Dr Turyagyenda also announced the new academic calendar for Term One of the 2026 school year. She said the term will run from February 10, 2026, to May 1, 2026.

“Term I for the Academic Year 2026 runs from Tuesday February 10, 2026 to Friday May 1, 2026,” she said.

She directed all school administrators to strictly follow the revised dates and the approved school calendar published by the ministry.

The Ministry had earlier announced on January 6, 2026, that schools would reopen on February 2, 2026. The change comes as the country prepares for general elections later in January.

Education stakeholders have in the past raised concerns about learner safety and school operations during election periods.
