Over 1,000 residents turned up for a free medical camp in Kitgum District on Monday, held in memory of the late Lt Gen Paul Lokech, a revered Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officer.
The camp, organized by the Paul Lokech Foundation (PLF), opened at Christ the King Parish. It marks an annual event dedicated to continuing Lokech’s legacy of public service. The PLF was founded in 2022 by his family to promote health and community development in his honour.
Medical teams from the UPDF 5 Infantry Division and volunteers from George Fox University are providing essential health services, including general consultations, dental care, HIV testing, blood pressure and sugar screening, and physiotherapy — all at no cost to patients.
Major General Keith Katungi, Commander of the UPDF 5 Infantry Division, launched the camp and urged locals to prioritize preventive care. “Health is the key to human living. Take advantage of these services to check for conditions that may affect your well-being,” he said.
The camp will run for two more days, with UPDF personnel continuing to operate outpatient services.
Local leaders welcomed the initiative and praised its impact. LC5 Chairperson Christopher Arwai Obol noted, “Lt Gen Lokech’s legacy in championing community well-being lives on through this camp. We thank PLF and all partners for their continued service.”
Senior Assistant RDC Ogutti Geoffrey Oguti, District Health Officer Dr Henry Otto, and several community leaders also attended the launch, along with members of Lokech’s family and senior officers from the UPDF and Uganda Police Force.
The medical outreach is part of broader commemorative events honoring Lt Gen Lokech, who is remembered as a national hero. Additional tributes, including a football tournament and a marathon, are planned for August 2025 in Agago District.
