Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has characterized Uganda’s open reporting on health epidemics as a vital patriotic responsibility to safeguard global populations.
Speaker Oboth made the remarks during a parliamentary meeting on Thursday with Dr. Beccy Cooper, the Chairperson of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health.
The head of Parliament stated that the government deliberately chose public transparency over protecting national economic interests during major outbreaks such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola.
Speaker Oboth emphasized that open disclosure enabled healthcare authorities to construct effective response protocols against dangerous pathogens.
"It was not about economics, it was about health," Speaker Oboth said.
Dr. Cooper expressed appreciation to the Ugandan government for its transparent outbreak reporting and public health leadership. She noted that infectious pathogens do not recognize geopolitical borders, making regional stability beneficial to global health security.
Minister of State for Health in Charge of Primary Health Care Hon. Charles Ayume commended the British government for supporting technical capacity building and medical training for Ugandan health workers during epidemic responses.
