Uganda Exceeds Measles-Rubella Vaccination Target by 669,000 Children

Uganda has vaccinated more than 8.2 million children against measles and rubella, exceeding its national target by 669,089 children.

The Ministry of Health said the campaign reached 8,285,835 children against a target of 7,616,746. This represents 108.8 per cent of the planned coverage.

The campaign ran from October 1 to October 5, 2026, targeting children aged nine to 59 months across the country.

In a statement dated October 7, 2026, the Director General of Health Services, Prof Charles Olaro, said the exercise provided an additional vaccine dose to strengthen children’s protection amid ongoing outbreaks. Children who had received the vaccine before were also eligible.

The ministry credited health workers, village health teams, district teams and community mobilisers for reaching children in remote areas. The teams travelled long distances and crossed difficult terrain to deliver vaccines.

It also thanked parents and caregivers for bringing children for vaccination. Local leaders, schools, religious and cultural institutions, partners and the media supported the campaign.

Although the mass vaccination exercise has ended, the ministry urged parents to follow their children’s routine immunisation schedules.

Parents whose children missed the campaign should contact the nearest health facility for guidance.
