A former Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff member, Aggrey Malongo, has been remanded in custody until September 2, 2024 on charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss to the government.

Malongo, aged 39 and a resident of Mukono District, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court, presided over by His Worship Abert Asiimwe. The state prosecution alleges that between January and December 2021, while serving as a tax officer at URA, Malongo altered the tax ledgers of 18 companies, resulting in a financial loss of Shs10.523 billion to the government.

Malongo pleaded not guilty to the four charges brought against him. The Magistrate urged the prosecution to expedite investigations to ensure the case is resolved swiftly. He also suggested that Malongo consider a plea bargain if there is substantial evidence against him.

The court further cautioned Malongo against attempting to bribe anyone to influence the outcome of the case. His lawyers were instructed to present substantial sureties during the next court appearance.
