Stella Nyanzi Undresses in Court, Gets 18 Months Imprisonment
By Kampala Post Reporter
Former Makerere University research fellow Dr. Stella Nyanzi has been convicted over cyber harassment against President Yoweri Museveni.
She has been sentenced to 18 months in prison but she will, however, due to the nine months she has spent on remand, serve for nine months.
Moments before she was sentenced Nyanzi who appeared in court via a video link, caused chaos by undressing, pouring water on the prison officers and disrupting the video link.
She was expected to receive her sentence via an audio visual link (video –conferencing), but the session turned chaotic when Dr Nyanzi started undressing on the camera and insulting the trial magistrate, Ms. Gladys Kamasanyu.
Dr Nyanzi was sentenced in absentia after the warders whisked her away from the camera.
While giving the judgment, Kamasanyu said the commonality of the alleged post was vulgar, scandalous, indecent and extremely offensive.
“The prosecution has with no reasonable doubt adduced thorough evidence that the alleged poem written by you Nyanzi was obscene and corrupts the minds of the young generation.
And basing on the fact that on April 16, 2019, you admitted for writing the alleged post, you are therefore found guilty and convicted on the first count,” Kamasanyu ruled.
Nyanzi was on Thursday found guilty by Buganda Road Court grade one Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu.
However, she was cleared on the charge of offensive Communication.
