Uganda collected 71.09 million (Shs252 billion) from coffee exports in November, having sold 524,902 bags of coffee weighing 60kg each, according to a report released by Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA).

This is higher than $61.43 million made from exporting 486,534 bags in October. Compared to the same month last year, UCDA says it was an increase of 22% and 66% in quantity and value respectively.

On a year-over-year basis, coffee exports for 12 months (December 2020-November 2021) totaled 6.65 million bags worth $681.49 million compared to 5.40 million bags worth US$ 514.37 million the previous year (December 2019-November 2020).

"This represents an increase of 23% and 32% in both quantity and value respectively," says UCDA.

"80% of the total volume was exported by 10 exporters, out of 44 companies which performed during the
month compared to 81% in October 2021."

The Authority says 436,417 bags of Robusta valued at $51.42 million were sold in November, while Arabica contributed 88,485 bags valued at $ 19.67 million.

"This was an increase of 21.98% and 65.90% in quantity and value respectively compared to the same month last year."

The rise in exports was attributed to newly planted coffee which started yielding supported by favorable weather.

"The positive trend in global coffee prices were attributed to weather-related issues in Brazil and shortage of shipping containers which prompted exporters to release their stocks," adds the report.

The leading coffee exporting companies in November were Ugacof (U) Ltd (14.72%), Olam Uganda Ltd (12.03%), Ideal Quality Commodities Ltd (10.48%), Touton Uganda Limited (9.72%), Kawacom (U) Ltd (6.81%), Louis Drefyfus Company (U) Ltd (6.80%), Ibero (U) Ltd (6.64%), Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd (5.67%), Besmark Coffee Company Ltd (4.09%), and Export Trading Company (U) Ltd (3.26%).

Most of the coffee went to Italy, which imported 32.76%, followed by Germany (17.43%), Belgium (8.06%), India (6.61%), and Algeria (5.56%).
