When someone is invited to a party to celebrate the victory of a man like Rajiv Ruperalia, the son of tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, the least you would expect is to pay for drinks if you must pay for anything at all.
However, many revellers were bamboozled when they were told by the Master of Ceremonies Patrick Idringi aka Salvado that they were free to eat the food but couldn't touch the drinks if they did not have the cash!
Some of the 'slay queens' who had been invited to the 'party' are said to have left the venue after being served cocktails whose ingredients were Uganda Waragi and Spite Soda with some ice cubes placed in the disposable containers. Other drinks like Johnie Walker products and others in the same category were only available for sale.
"Only cocktails are free," one of the waiters is quoted to have told a guest.
One of the revellers told this reporter that this was uncharacteristic of a party associated with the Ruparelias.
"I have been at many parties organised by Sudhir himself and this can never happen. How can you make people buy drinks at a party, I last saw this at a village wedding in Igara," the reveller noted adding that if Sudhir had been at the event, things would have been different.
This was at the celebration of Rajiv's victory party at Kabila Country Club that is owned by the Ruparelias.
The Sunday event was dubbed Kabalega Rally 2021 victory BBQ Party in a flyer that was sent to invited guests.
This followed Rajiv's triumph after 'defeating' top rally drivers in the country on Saturday in Hoima during the fifth round of the National Rally Championship (NRC).
Ruparelia and his co-driver Enock Olinga won the Kabalega Rally in a VW Proto in a time of one hour, 44 minutes and 56 seconds but critics doubt the authenticity of the whole competition, particularly Rajiv's victory since he has joined the sport only recently. It is reported that Rajiv finished the race 45 seconds ahead of NRC standings leader Duncan Mubiru.
Since the return motorsport in March following the Covid-19 lockdown, Rajiv is said to have improved at the game having finished three events – including a podium at the United Motor Club (UMC) Kassanda rally.
