Wakiso Dance Kids Dream Bigger After Shakira Recognition

Uganda’s Wakiso Dance Kids have received global attention after Colombian music star Shakira shared one of the group’s dance videos on her Instagram story with the message: “I love them.”

The viral clip showed the children performing to “Shaka Shaka / Dai Dai” by Shakira and Burna Boy. The video attracted praise online for the children’s energy, creativity and enthusiasm.

For the Wakiso-based dance group, the repost marked a major breakthrough after years of using dance to support and uplift vulnerable children in Uganda. Many of the children come from difficult backgrounds and have relied on dance as a source of confidence, hope and self-expression.

The recognition from Shakira has since boosted the group’s morale and strengthened belief that their talent can create opportunities beyond Uganda.

“This moment means everything to us,” the foundation’s founder, Mubiru David, said. “For one of the world’s biggest artists to notice and share our work tells these children that they matter, that they are seen, and that their dreams are valid.”

Following the repost, supporters from different countries continued to celebrate the group online, with many praising the children’s authenticity and passion.

The recognition has also inspired a bigger ambition within the foundation. The children now hope to one day perform alongside Shakira during celebrations linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The group says music and dance can unite people from different cultures and inspire communities across the world. For the children, the repost served as proof that talent from small communities can still reach a global audience.
