Gen Kainerugaba Mourns Passing of Tooro King Oyo: "Our Country Has Lost a Great Royal"

Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has expressed grief following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, who passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 34.

In a tweet on Friday, Gen. Kainerugaba conveyed his deep shock and sadness at the passing of the young monarch.

"I am extremely saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV. Our country has lost a great royal at a very young age. He still had a lot to contribute to our beloved country. May his soul rest in eternal peace," the General wrote.

The King's death was confirmed in a late-night statement issued by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who announced that the monarch passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m.. The announcement came after a day of uncertainty, during which the kingdom had earlier dismissed social media reports of the King's death, stating he was in critical condition.

Omukama Oyo, who ascended to the throne at just three years old in 1995 following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, reigned for over three decades. Born on April 16, 1992, he was recognized as one of the world's youngest reigning monarchs.

The Tooro Kingdom has assured the public of the continuity of the crown, stating that the late King leaves behind a Prince who will be his heir. An official statement regarding funeral and mourning arrangements is expected to follow.
