Police have launched a manhunt for a male suspect following the suspected murder of legendary Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu in Kampala early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
According to police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, Matovu had visited his girlfriend's residence before an altercation broke out as the couple prepared to leave.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that at approximately 5:30 a.m., the deceased went to the residence of his girlfriend," Kawala stated. "It is alleged that as he and the lady were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect who is also alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same lady.”
A violent physical confrontation ensued between the two men outside the property.
Matovu sustained severe injuries during the clash.
A motorcycle taxi operator rushed the critically injured musician to nearby Kibuli Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Doctors could not save his life, and he succumbed to the injuries shortly after admission.
Detectives immediately arrested the female companion at the scene.
"The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigations," Kawala confirmed.
The male assailant fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Police officers have positively identified the runaway assailant and deployed search units across the metropolitan area to apprehend him.
Forensic teams are currently verifying witness testimonies and analyzing physical evidence collected from the crime scene.
Authorities have appealed to the public for calm and cooperation as homicide investigators trace the suspect's movements.
