The Police say Privatization and Investment Minister Evelyn Anite has recorded a statement in regard to claims that a mafia group wants to end her life.

Addressing a weekly press briefing on Monday, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed that Anite made a statement over the weekend at the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli and that investigations into the matter have commenced.

“We have a task team at the directorate of criminal investigation that recorded a comprehensive statement from the Minister of Privatization and Investment Evelyn Anite and we are now actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to help prove or disapprove the claims of alleged death threats to her life,” Enanga said.

He explained that the Minister has mentioned some names of those she claims could be behind threats to her life. Police however did not give names for fear of jeopardizing investigations. Enanga also revealed that police have increased the Minister’s security vigilance.

Minister Anite who is also the Koboko Municipality Member of Parliament last week addressed a press conference in which she claimed that a group of those she termed as mafias want to kill her. She claimed that the threats were as a result of her involvement in trying to rectify problems within Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL).

The Minister recently ordered an audit into the Telecom company operations, a directive that didn’t amuse the managers.
