The Uganda Police Force has granted permission to eight licensed companies to display fireworks tonight as the country welcomes 2025.

The approved companies include Tomil Fireworks Ltd, Quality Lighting (U) Ltd, Fireworks 7000 Ltd, Light Africa Ltd, Goshen Africa Ltd, Extremes Events Services Ltd, Sky Frames (U) Ltd, and FESCO Ltd.

ACP Rusoke Kituuma, the Police Public Relations Officer, announced that a total of 2,900 applications from various organisations such as hotels, entertainment centres, and places of worship were approved. Strict guidelines have been put in place to ensure public safety during the celebrations

Organisations are required to publicise their displays through electronic and print media, particularly on local FM radio stations and in newspapers. Print advertisements must be prominently placed on pages 1, 2, 3, or 4 and designed to capture public attention. Fireworks must not exceed a calibre of 1.5mm, and each display is limited to a maximum duration of five minutes from the first blast.

Counter-Terrorism Police personnel and District Police Commanders (DPCs) will supervise the displays, ensuring that all venues are inspected for safety and suitability. Unused fireworks must only be handled by licensed explosives blasters, and DPCs have the authority to stop any display that fails to meet the set guidelines. Non-compliance will result in the immediate termination of the display and may lead to further action.

The police have also urged the public to avoid burning tyres during the celebrations and issued a stern warning against firing weapons into the air to mark the New Year.
