The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced a full closure of Karuma Bridge from March 10 to March 31, 2025, to facilitate the installation of expansion joints.
The bridge, which was partially reopened on December 20, 2024, for light vehicles after urgent repairs, will now undergo critical works to ensure long-term stability and restore full traffic flow.
According to the ministry, the same period will also be used to replace worn-out expansion joints on Ayago Bridge along the Karuma-Olwiyo road.
Motorists traveling between Kampala and Gulu/West Nile have been advised to use the alternative route through Luwero, Kafu, Masindi, Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park), Pakwach, or Gulu via Olwiyo.
Those traveling between Kampala and Lira can take the Iganga, Nakalama, Tirinyi, Pallisa, Kumi, Soroti, and Lira route. Additionally, motorists to Lira can use the Rwenkunye-Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has urged the public to plan accordingly. “We appreciate your understanding and regret any inconvenience caused,” said Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport.
