The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has received topographic mapping equipment worth USD 3 million from the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Defence, strengthening military-technical cooperation between the two countries.
Major General Sergey Marchuk, head of the Russian Military Specialists’ Office in Uganda, officially handed over the equipment to Brigadier General Paul Namawa, Chief of Staff of the Special Forces Command (SFC), during a ceremony at the SFC Headquarters in Entebbe.
The new equipment will help the UPDF produce precise and detailed terrain maps, including elevation data, natural landscapes, and man-made structures — vital tools for both military and civilian planning.
The handover ceremony was attended by officers from the Special Forces Command, underscoring the importance of the partnership between Uganda and Russia.
The donation reflects the growing defence ties between the two nations, which have strengthened over the years through joint projects and training. In 2023, Uganda and Russia established PRO HELI International Service Limited, a joint venture for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of both civil and military helicopters.
Beyond defence, Uganda–Russia cooperation also covers scientific research, academia, military training, and technology development.
