The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is improving its electricity network to provide a safer and more reliable power supply across the country. To achieve this, the company is conducting planned maintenance and power shutdowns this week.
The project, which started on May 2 and will run until May 30, affects districts including Kampala, Masindi, Lira, Kitgum, Mbarara, Jinja, Kasese, and others. Technicians are replacing rotten poles, clearing vegetation, installing new protection devices, and servicing transformers, impacting thousands of customers.

UEDCL recognised the inconvenience but emphasised the necessity of these upgrades. "These improvements are essential for a safer and more stable electricity supply," the company said in a customer advisory this month.
The outages, mostly during daytime hours, affect key substations and feeders serving major towns, industrial zones, trading centres, and rural communities. The work includes replacing hazardous infrastructure, such as damaged poles and faulty switchgear, diverting lines, and installing protective devices like drop-out fuses and autoreclosers.
In industrial areas like Jinja, Namanve, and Kapeeka, efforts focus on maintaining switchgear, repairing busbars, and adjusting load management to support growing energy needs. UEDCL encouraged customers to plan for disruptions.
