President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed government agencies to urgently tackle livestock theft, illegal school fees collection, youth unemployment, and poor public service delivery in the Greater Mpigi region.

Speaking to journalists from Mpigi, Butambala, and Gomba districts at State Lodge Nakasero, the President expressed concern over rising cattle theft in Gomba. He questioned the absence of police canine units to track down the criminals and ordered an immediate investigation.

“I don’t know why there are no police Canine dogs deployed in Gomba to help with tracking these criminals,” President Museveni said. “I have directed police leadership to investigate this issue and provide a solution.”

Turning to education, the President condemned the illegal charging of fees in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools, calling it a betrayal of the government’s commitment to free education.

“We started the skilling hubs after realizing that some people were frustrating the government’s free education program,” he said. “Currently, there are three skilling hubs in Buganda as a demonstration of my commitment to ensuring Ugandans, especially the youth, can acquire free skills.”

He reiterated that UPE and Universal Secondary Education (USE) should remain free and accessible to all, and any form of sabotage through unauthorized fees would not be tolerated.

In response to complaints about electricity access in some parts of Mpigi, President Museveni directed the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to address the issue and connect the affected areas to the national grid.

During the engagement, journalists from Butambala District requested an increase in Parish Development Model (PDM) funding due to population growth. President Museveni said the current allocation of Shs100 million per parish is sufficient if properly managed.

“There’s no need to rush to increase the amount now. If beneficiaries use the money well, it will revolve and help many more people in the coming years,” he noted.

On allegations of job negligence among agricultural extension workers in Mpigi, particularly concerning poultry and livestock diseases, the President tasked the State House agriculture department to investigate. He warned that any public servant who fails in their duties would be held accountable.

“Negligence in service delivery will not be tolerated,” Museveni emphasized.

President Museveni reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving public service, empowering youth through skills development, supporting farmers, and enforcing accountability among government workers.
