President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced plans to transform Kityerera in Mayuge District into a model village as a tribute to fallen comrades of the Uganda Freedom Movement (FRONASA) from Busoga region.
The President made the announcement during an engagement with the children and grandchildren of the late Eng. Samuel Kasadha and other FRONASA fighters who were killed during Idi Amin’s regime.
“These comrades contributed greatly in the struggle for a free Uganda but were brutally murdered by Idi Amin,” Museveni stated on his official X platform. “Their contribution is the foundation for the peace we have today.”
The President commended the people of Mayuge and the broader Busoga region for their warm hospitality during his visit and reiterated his commitment to community transformation.
In a follow-up message, Museveni revealed that the Mayuge State Lodge farm in Kityerera will be converted into a centre of farming excellence. He said the initiative would act as a model to inspire neighbouring communities to adopt productive ventures.
Drawing from his experience in Gomba District, Museveni recalled how he launched a grassroots wealth creation initiative to uplift poor households in his neighbourhood.
“Why should I have poor neighbours?” he asked, highlighting the success of the programme he started through his staff, Nalwanga, which involved distributing cows, seedlings, and funds to support local farming and cooperatives.
“My neighbours in Mayuge will have a similar initiative, starting with turning the State Lodge farm into a farming excellence, to inspire them, then providing capital and materials to enable every neighbour within the parish to engage in a wealth creation venture,” Museveni noted.
He said supported enterprises may include fish farming, coffee cultivation, livestock rearing, or other personal income-generating activities.
The President’s new plan is part of a broader vision to fight poverty at the household level using targeted interventions and community empowerment.
