The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has graduated 1,020 officers after completing intensive artillery and air defence training at the School of Artillery and Air Defence (SAAD) in Morulinga Village, Olilim Sub-county, Katakwi District.

The ceremony, held on Saturday, was presided over by Maj Gen Dan Kakono, Commander of the Artillery Division, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. He commended the officers for their endurance and discipline, stressing that training remained central to building a modern army.

“Building an army involves training. The UPDF of the future depends on how you, the young officers, take your training seriously,” Maj Gen Kakono said. He urged the graduates to uphold professionalism, responsibility, and patriotism, adding, “Countries without the capacity to defend themselves are easily swallowed up. We live in a practical world of self-defence.”

He also thanked the local community for supporting the school and contributing to the success of the programme.

Brig Gen Ali Kiiza Kasauli, Director Anti-Aircraft – Land Force, reminded the officers that discipline must guide both their service and private lives. He warned against misuse of social media, noting that irresponsible conduct online could endanger both careers and national security.

SAAD Commandant, Lt Col Abenul, revealed that 428 officers specialised in artillery while 592 trained in air defence. “It has not been an easy task, but your discipline and endurance have brought you this far. Continue upholding the values of this school and the UPDF. Live a healthy lifestyle and maintain physical fitness,” he said.
