The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has begun a mass registration exercise for Ugandans living in Germany to obtain or renew their National Identity Cards. The initiative, launched as part of Uganda’s Independence Month celebrations, aims to ease access to national identification services for the Ugandan diaspora.
The exercise was officially opened by Uganda’s Ambassador to Germany, Stephen Mubiru, who welcomed the NIRA delegation and urged Ugandans residing in Germany to participate actively.
“This is a great opportunity for our nationals abroad to register and update their identification details without having to travel back home,” Ambassador Mubiru said, emphasizing the importance of national IDs in accessing government services and exercising citizenship rights.
The registration drive will take place in six cities—Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Nuremberg—targeting thousands of Ugandans spread across Germany. It is expected to strengthen the government’s efforts to maintain accurate national data and foster inclusion for Ugandans abroad.
The embassy encouraged Ugandans to turn up in large numbers, noting that the exercise not only supports identification but also enhances access to consular services, voting, and other national programs.
