President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged Ugandans to protect the peace and development achieved under the National Resistance Movement (NRM), as he campaigned in Mitooma District on Wednesday.
Speaking at Kirambe Market in Ijumo Parish, the NRM flagbearer said the party’s leadership rejected sectarian politics and united the country, which enabled lasting security and progress.
“We rejected politics based on religion, tribe and gender. That’s how peace came,” President Museveni said.
He told supporters that the NRM’s second major contribution is development through improved social and economic infrastructure. He said Mitooma now has 109 government primary schools and 16 government secondary schools, and government will continue strengthening health services across the district.
Museveni emphasized wealth creation as the third pillar of Uganda’s transformation, saying poverty remains a personal burden that individuals must fight by engaging in productive economic activities. He advised households with small pieces of land to follow the four-acre model to increase productivity, while those with large landholdings can invest in commercial crops such as cotton and tobacco.
The President announced plans for a revolving fund to support tea farmers in purchasing fertilisers to boost production. He said job creation is the fourth contribution of the NRM, generated through commercial agriculture, factories, ICT, and service industries. He encouraged youth to utilise skilling centres to acquire practical abilities for self-employment and promised to expand training facilities.
Responding to community concerns, Museveni pledged to direct the Uganda Wildlife Authority to install an electric fence around the gazetted area to prevent wild animals from destroying crops.
First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, thanked residents for their strong support. She praised God “for protecting the President and guiding the NRM,” and urged continued prayers for Uganda. She also appreciated Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for reconciling party members after primaries and recognised Gen. Kahinda Otafiire for guiding young people who “do not know the hardships of the past.”
Rt. Hon. Tayebwa said the Parish Development Model (PDM) is transforming livelihoods and thanked the President for granting Mitooma District status. He also requested fertilisers to boost coffee production.
Mitooma District NRM Chairperson Moses Tumwekwese assured the President of 98 percent support in the next elections, saying residents will vote to maintain the development already achieved — including PDM funding, youth empowerment programmes and improved roads.
