Uganda People's Defence Forces says the growing involvement of women in military service is strengthening both representation and mission delivery, particularly in complex operations such as peacekeeping.

The Director of Women Affairs, Charity Bainababo, delivered the message during a lecture of opportunity to officers attending logistics training at the College of Logistics and Engineering in Maga Maga.

“The presence of women in the UPDF has enhanced the force’s representativeness, improved effectiveness in complex environments like peacekeeping, and provided strong role models for future generations,” she said.

Brig Gen Bainababo linked the progress to Uganda’s National Gender and Equity Policy.
She said the approach stems from the pro-people ideology shaped during the bush war led by the National Resistance Army.

She noted that the struggle emphasized that liberation would be incomplete without empowering marginalized groups, especially women.

Brig Gen Bainababo said women served in multiple capacities during the war. She said they worked as support staff, fighters, and political mobilisers.

She cited examples of senior female officers who contributed significantly, including Proscovia Nalweyiso, Olive Zizinga, Gertrude Njuba, and Janat Mukwaya.
