President Yoweri Museveni and AGRA Chairman Hailemariam Desalegn have moved to strengthen Uganda's agricultural sector through a new partnership focusing on scientific research and financing. The collaboration aims to modernize farming via improved irrigation and livestock feed research, directly impacting national food security and rural household incomes.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Wednesday to discuss strategic investments in Uganda’s agricultural and livestock sectors.

The meeting took place at Nakasero State Lodge in Kampala. Desalegn attended the session in his capacity as the Chairman of the Board of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). The AGRA team provides support to Uganda through scientific research, product packaging, financing, and policy advocacy.

The leaders focused their discussion on enhancing food security and boosting household incomes across the country. They identified irrigation, high-quality seeds, and increased fertilizer use as essential pillars for modernizing local farming. President Museveni emphasized the need to strengthen local seed systems to ensure sustainable agricultural growth.

Regarding the livestock sector, the President highlighted the historical challenges of nomadic cattle keeping. He explained that long-distance movement for water and pasture previously hindered effective disease control. To modernize this sector, the President sought assistance for specific scientific research.

"I requested support for research on animal feeds to address the challenges farmers are facing today," President Museveni stated.

The President expressed his approval of the ongoing collaboration between the government and the international agricultural group.

"I welcome their partnership," he added.

The meeting underscores Uganda’s commitment to leveraging regional expertise and scientific innovation to transform its agrarian economy.
