Ugandan Ambassador Earns Top International Social Impact Award

Uganda has earned major international recognition after Ambassador Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu was named among the winners of the Islamic University of Madinah Distinguished Alumni Award for 2026.

Dr Ssemuddu, who currently serves as Uganda’s Ambassador to Sudan, received the Social Impact Award during the 62nd Graduation Ceremony of the Islamic University of Madinah held on April 27, 2026.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of the Al-Madinah Region.

Uganda was among only five countries recognised in this year’s awards, alongside France, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Suriname, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Dr Ssemuddu was selected from more than 150,000 alumni of the university. He was honoured for his contribution to society through community service, volunteer work, humanitarian efforts, and his strong role in promoting education and faith-based leadership.

The Social Impact Award recognises alumni who have made meaningful contributions to society and positively influenced communities through service and leadership.

Officials said Dr Ssemuddu was also recognised for his academic excellence, da’wah work, and his role in representing both Uganda and the university with distinction on the global stage.

Other award categories included Professional Achievement and Sustainable Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Scientific Impact, and Intellectual Awareness.

The recognition is seen as a proud moment for Uganda and reflects the country’s growing presence in diplomacy, scholarship, and humanitarian service.

Dr Ssemuddu is widely respected for his diplomatic work and for supporting educational, social, and charitable causes both in Uganda and abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the award as a symbol of national excellence and faith-driven leadership, saying it strengthens Uganda’s standing in the global community.

As celebrations continue ahead of the official ceremony in Madinah, many see the honour as proof of Uganda’s rising international reputation and leadership.
