US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Adonia Ayebare in Washington, DC and they discussed ways in which the two countries can deepen cooperation on trade, investment, regional security and global health.
US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the talks focused on key areas of bilateral cooperation.
“Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met today in Washington, D.C., with Ugandan Foreign Minister Adonia Ayebare. They discussed ways to advance bilateral cooperation on key issues, including shared global health priorities, economic growth, and regional security,” Pigott said.
Ayebare said the meeting also covered migration and security cooperation.
“I was hosted by @DeputySecState. We had a very productive meeting that covered, trade and investment, migration, global health security, regional issues and security cooperation,” Ayebare said.
The meeting comes as Kampala seeks to strengthen ties with Washington across security and economic interests.
Trade and investment have become a major part of Uganda’s foreign policy agenda as the government looks for new markets, investors and strategic partnerships.
Regional security also remains central to Uganda’s relations with the US because of Kampala’s military role in East Africa and the Great Lakes region.
Meanwhile, Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the East African nation had reinstated the mission following discussions with Ayebare.
“After talking to Honourable @adoniaayebare, our Foreign Minister, we have reinstated our Gaza mission. Hon.Adonia is in the USA right now meeting our many friends. We are happy to contribute to peace in Gaza,” Gen Kainerugaba said.
Parliament has already approved the proposed deployment of Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces troops to Gaza.
The government said the troops would serve under an International Stabilisation Force and contribute to peace, security and humanitarian efforts.
