The commander of the UPDF’s 4 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, has told officers that caring for their soldiers is essential to building units they can trust in battle.
Maj Gen Sserunkuma addressed officers taking the Platoon Commanders Course at the division’s training school in Lugore, Gulu District. He urged them to understand what affects their soldiers’ morale and address their concerns.
He said commanders need motivated soldiers to carry out tactical missions. He also urged the trainees to uphold discipline and set an example through their conduct.
“Maintain discipline as a commander, as your platoon will learn more from your conduct and actions than from your words,” he advised.
The school’s commandant, Lt Col Charles Okech, said the course prepares officers to lead and manage platoons and companies. It covers military knowledge, tactical skills, ideological orientation and the UPDF’s ethos.
The school also runs other programmes, including special arms training for newly passed-out soldiers.
