Parliament Approves new Extension of Term of Local Councils

Parliament has approved the extension of the term of office for Local Councils 1 and 2, Women’s Councils and Women’s Executives.

On July 28th 2023, Government tabled Statutory Instruments extending the tenure of Local Councils for a period of 180 days pursuant to Regulation 11A(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations and Regulation 2 (3) of the Schedule to the National Women’s Council Act.

The 180 days were due to expire on 5th January 2024 prompting the Minister to issue another extension on 29th December 2023.

During the plenary sitting on Tuesday chaired by Speaker Anita Among, House approved the extension of the term of office for the Local Councils for another 180 days effective today.

Government has been postponing the election of LCs due to financial constraints.
