Deputy Speaker Urges Victoria University to Prioritize Innovation and Quality

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has called on Victoria University to focus on innovation and quality education to contribute to Africa's development. In his address at the university's 8th graduation ceremony held at the International Convention Centre, Munyonyo on Friday, 20 September 2024, Tayebwa emphasized the importance of groundbreaking research and addressing the continent's challenges through technological advancements.

"Innovation is critical for transforming Africa," Tayebwa stated. "By focusing on quality assurance, student-lecturer ratios, teaching space, and mentorship, Victoria University can play a vital role in driving progress."

The Deputy Speaker also highlighted the need for the university to adapt to the changing landscape of technology. He emphasized the importance of understanding and embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to remain competitive in the global market. "AI will not replace jobs; it will simply change the way we work," Tayebwa said.

Victoria University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Muganga, echoed the importance of innovation and adaptation. He noted that the university's focus on competence-based teaching has proven effective in shaping the careers of its students. Muganga also announced the establishment of AI laboratories to develop systems that can understand local languages and business practices.

The graduation ceremony saw 1,470 students receive their degrees in various academic fields, including business studies, medicine, information technology, and law.
