Uganda’s para powerlifting team has intensified training ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where three athletes will represent the country

Uganda’s para powerlifting team has stepped up training ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Three athletes will represent the country in the sport. This will be Uganda’s biggest para powerlifting team at the Games.

The team is training at ISK Gym in Ndeeba as it prepares for the event, which will run from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

Uganda expects to send athletes in 10 sports. Para powerlifting is among the disciplines where the country hopes to win medals.

Janet Nakayobyo will compete in the women’s lightweight category. Rebecca Zawedde will take part in the women’s heavyweight division.

Zawedde called for more government support for para sports. She said better funding would help athletes prepare well and compete at a higher level.

Team captain Dennis Mbaziira is the only male athlete on the squad. He will compete in the men’s heavyweight category above 72 kilogrammes.

Mbaziira will make his second Commonwealth Games appearance. He has also competed at the Paralympic Games and the Islamic Solidarity Games.

He believes that experience has prepared him to fight for a medal in Glasgow.

Head coach Kenneth Sekiranda said the team’s recent outing at the Africa Powerlifting Championships in Algeria gave the athletes confidence and useful competition time.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will run under the theme “More in Common.” The theme promotes inclusion, shared values and stronger community ties.

About 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are expected to compete. Uganda is expected to field at least 55 athletes across 10 sports.
