Kenya: Protesters Call for Ruto's Resignation Despite U-Turn on Finance Bill

Calls for President William Ruto's resignation are growing in Kenya, even after he backtracked on a contentious finance. The bill had sparked widespread protests that turned violent, resulting in over 20 fatalities in clashes with the police.

During his presidential campaign, Ruto positioned himself as an ‘anti-establishment figure’, pledging to enact measures that would increase the disposable income of Kenyan citizens. However, his administration's removal of vital fuel and maize flour subsidies left many of his supporters disillusioned, viewing it as a breach of trust.

Despite Ruto's frequent appeals for austerity measures from the populace, his decision to charter a lavish private jet for his state visit to the US in May drew criticism. This move was seen as extravagant, especially considering the availability of the presidential jet and Kenya's national carrier for official travel.

Ruto later clarified that the private jet had been funded by unnamed associates, but this explanation failed to appease his detractors.

Critics have accused Ruto of being influenced by foreign powers, particularly the United States, in shaping Kenya's financial policies. They argue that he prioritizes directives from international entities like the IMF and World Bank over addressing the economic struggles faced by Kenyan citizens.
