President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue as the primary solution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, during a meeting with Malik Agar, the Deputy Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council.

The meeting took place at State House Entebbe, where Agar led Sudan’s delegation to the 12th High-Level Regional Oversight Mechanism (ROM) Summit of the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes Region.

President Museveni called for a deeper understanding of the underlying causes of the conflict. “You must identify the root causes of the conflict if you are to find a lasting solution,” he told the visiting Sudanese delegation.

Agar and the President discussed the current situation in Sudan, focusing on sustainable peace efforts. The President emphasized that national dialogue, rather than armed confrontation, should be the path forward for the Sudanese people.

While addressing the ROM summit, President Museveni, who officially assumed chairmanship of the peace mechanism, underscored the importance of regional ownership of peace initiatives. He stressed that the Great Lakes countries must take collective responsibility for peace and security with limited external interference.

Since late 2023, President Museveni has hosted multiple delegations from the warring parties in Sudan. These engagements aim to promote ceasefire agreements and political dialogue as a path to resolving the crisis.

The meeting and the summit demonstrate Uganda’s ongoing role as a mediator in regional conflicts and its strategic commitment to diplomacy and peacebuilding.
