Government Starts Distributing UGX 18M Resettlement Grant per Household in Bugisu

The Government has launched a direct disaster resettlement program offering UGX 18 million per household to families in landslide-vulnerable areas of Bugisu to purchase safe land and relocate permanently.

The Government of Uganda has started disbursing a one-off resettlement compensation grant of UGX 18 million per household to families residing in landslide-prone slopes across the Bugisu sub-region.

Beneficiaries are mandated to utilize the financial package specifically to acquire alternative land in safer zones within Bugisu or elsewhere across the country.

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja announced the initiative during a high-level consultative meeting attended by Third Deputy Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Rukia Nakadama, cabinet ministers, technical experts, Members of Parliament, and local government executives from eastern Uganda.

The direct cash model replaces the slower, state-managed land acquisition approach, allowing vulnerable households to purchase safe residential property immediately and independently.

The initiative targets families living on the high-risk slopes of Mount Elgon, where heavy seasonal rains consistently trigger destructive landslides and catastrophic mudslides.

Local leaders and lawmakers from Bugisu welcomed the intervention, urging beneficiaries to vacate vulnerable enclaves promptly to avoid loss of life.
