President Museveni has revealed that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV left a young boy who will inherit the Tooro throne.
Museveni said Queen Mother Best Kemigisa confirmed the existence of the heir during a telephone call. The Royal Family will introduce the boy to the public at the right time.
“Fortunately, in a telephone call, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa told me that H.H. Oyo left a young boy heir that will be introduced to the public at the right time,” Museveni said.
The President did not disclose the boy’s name and age.
Tooro Kingdom had earlier assured its subjects that the monarchy would continue after King Oyo’s death. Kingdom officials said the heir’s identity would be revealed in line with Tooro customs.
Museveni also directed the government to accord King Oyo an official burial.
He ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast for three days. The period will cover the day before the burial, the burial day and the following day.
The President mourned King Oyo as a young leader who worked with the government to develop Tooro.
He praised him for maintaining cooperation with central authorities and avoiding sectarian politics.
“King Oyo worked well with the central government, thereby avoiding the mistake of trying to use the cultural institutions that were restored by the NRM to promote sectarianism,” Museveni said.
He urged other cultural leaders to follow that example.
Museveni said the King’s death at 34 robbed Tooro and Uganda of a leader with great potential.
“In the short life on earth, he had shown that he had potential of working well with the central and local governments to develop Tooro,” he said.
The President also revealed that King Oyo had battled aggressive cancer. He said Queen Mother Kemigisa informed him about the illness several months ago.
The government supported the King’s treatment in Germany and the United States, where he died.
Tooro Kingdom announced King Oyo’s death on August 27, 2026.
