The Makerere University Retirement Benefits Scheme held a member sensitisation session focused on life beyond active employment.

The session, titled Understanding Identity Shifts; Developing Routines; Sustaining Motivation and Purpose, stressed that retirement planning goes beyond money. Speakers said people must also prepare mentally, emotionally and socially, from early career to post-retirement.

Professor Seggane Musisi delivered the keynote address. He said many people tie their identity to job titles and work roles. He warned that retirement can bring a sense of loss if individuals fail to redefine themselves early. He urged members to build a post-work identity based on values, purpose and service to society.

Participants were guided on how to prepare for retirement at different career stages. They discussed how to build healthy routines that support mental balance and productivity. The session also focused on staying motivated and purposeful after leaving formal work.

The discussion highlighted the need to manage stress, protect physical and mental health and maintain strong social ties. Members were also advised to balance family demands with personal wellbeing.

Speakers addressed Uganda’s retirement realities, including family expectations, social pressure and financial strain. They also discussed age-related risks such as dementia, depression and chronic illness. The session stressed early prevention, emotional strength and seeking professional help on time.

Organisers concluded that retirement is a continuous process, not a single event. Members were encouraged to plan early, adjust with time and design a meaningful life beyond work, financially, socially and psychologically.
