Marine Forces Root for Joint Operations to Boost Water Security

The Commandant of Police Marines, CP Sulaiman Kirungi, has called on commanders to improve joint operations with other security agencies to strengthen safety on Uganda’s waters.

He made the remarks at the start of a three-day Marines retreat in Kigo. The meeting is held under the theme of improving cooperation in maritime operations and law enforcement.

Kirungi said close coordination is key to fighting crime, improving safety and protecting communities that depend on water bodies.

The retreat has brought together Marine commanders and heads of department from the Police Marines. It also includes officers from the UPDF Marine Forces, officials from the Ministry of Fisheries, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and teams from the police legal and human resource departments.

During the meeting, Mark Atewebembere, the Principal Fisheries Inspector in charge of enforcement, spoke about the state of Uganda’s waters. He highlighted both opportunities and challenges. He urged stronger enforcement of regulations and better management of resources.

Brig Gen Michael Nyarwa, the Commander of the UPDF Marine Forces, also called for deeper cooperation between the two forces. He said joint training, shared operations and capacity building are necessary.

He stressed the need for regular drills, sharing intelligence and improving skills in navigation, rescue and law enforcement.

Nyarwa said these efforts will help make Uganda’s waters safer and improve security for all citizens.

Officials said the retreat aims to build stronger links between agencies and improve engagement with communities while upholding the rule of law.
