President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hosted Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at State House, Entebbe, and called for renewed dialogue to end Sudan’s war.

The high-level meeting focused on efforts to halt the conflict that has gripped Sudan since April 2023 and to restore stability in the region.

Sudan descended into violence after clashes erupted between the Sudan Armed Forces under Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF led by Gen. Dagalo. The fighting began in Khartoum and spread across the country. It displaced millions of civilians and crippled essential services. The conflict has since evolved into one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises.

During the meeting, President Museveni reiterated that only negotiations can deliver lasting peace in Sudan. He cautioned against divisive political approaches and urged leaders to focus on shared national interests.

“When I last came to Sudan, I met President Bashir and advised against the politics of identity instead of the politics of interest,” President Museveni said.

“Identity politics is poisonous. It does not yield good results. What is important are shared interests that unite people,” he added.

The President emphasized the need for African-led initiatives to resolve African conflicts. He urged the warring parties to prioritize dialogue over continued military confrontation.

Gen. Dagalo thanked President Museveni for hosting him and praised his leadership on the continent.

“Your victory is not only a gain for Ugandans but for the whole continent. We look at you as a wise man of Africa. We truly believe in your principles and your commitment to peace,” Gen. Dagalo said.

He acknowledged the scale of Sudan’s humanitarian and institutional challenges and stressed the urgency of a peaceful settlement.
