President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched the 10th Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE 2026), announcing plans to ease visa entry frameworks to boost international visitor arrivals.

The President opened the three-day flagship trade exhibition on Thursday at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Organized by the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the landmark event runs until May 23 under the theme “Wanderlust.” The premium expo brings together global travel buyers, regional exhibitors, media, and hospitality industry leaders to network and explore the country’s diverse investment opportunities.

During his inaugural address, President Museveni emphasized that Uganda holds a competitive advantage in global travel due to its unique geographical traits. He cited the nation's favorable climate, rich cultural heritage, peaceful environment, and abundant wildlife as key drivers for economic growth. The President re-emphasized the government's commitment to prioritizing infrastructure improvements to elevate the visitor experience.

“Uganda remains one of the most unique tourism destinations because of our favourable climate, rich culture, peace and natural beauty,” President Museveni stated.

The President also addressed public health concerns directly during the convention to reassure international travelers and operators. He stated that recent concerns regarding Ebola should not cause panic among visitors or disrupt travel plans. Museveni noted that the Ministry of Health is deploying targeted, scientific interventions to guarantee maximum public safety without closing down economic activities.

“Regarding Ebola, there is no cause for alarm," President Museveni noted. "We are applying targeted measures and continuing to work scientifically to keep people safe while keeping our economy open.”

State House through a post on X confirmed that the government views the tourism sector as a critical export pillar capable of generating massive employment and foreign exchange. As the country targets upper-middle-income status, policymakers plan to simplify immigration policies to maintain competitive edge. Museveni concluded by inviting international vacationers to explore the country's diverse national parks, landscapes, and heritage sites.

“I therefore welcome the world to come and explore Uganda, the Pearl of Africa,” the President added.
