Principal Judge, Dr Flavian Zeija on Saturday evening survived an assassination after unknown assailants shot at his convoy.

According to a statement from the Judiciary, the incident happened at about 7pm on Saturday evening along Kampala-Masaka Highway.

"Thankfully, the principal Judge and his entire team escaped unhurt from the incident," the statement reads.

The Judiciary has condemned with incident as "barbaric."

"This was an act of cowardice and we are confident that the perpetrators should at an appropriate time be brought to book. The Uganda Police Force has commenced investigations into the incident," the statement reads.

Dr. Flavian Zeija, a lawyer, academic and judge, on the High Court of Uganda, became the country's Principal Judge on 25 December 2019.

A Principal Judge is responsible for supervising the justices of the High Court, including the assignment of duties to members of the Court. The Principal Judge is also responsible for supervising the Magistrates Courts below the High Court.

The Principal Judge is the third in the hierarchy of the Judiciary after Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice.
