Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has urged newly appointed parliamentary leaders to serve the country with absolute integrity.
The Speaker demanded strict diligence and a deep commitment to the interests of all Ugandans.
He delivered the charge during a plenary sitting on Thursday as the 12th Parliament commenced its official work.
The address followed the formal appointment of members to the Parliamentary Commission and various leadership committees.
The appointments also finalized Uganda's representatives to regional and international parliamentary bodies.
These bodies include the Pan-African Parliament, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Speaker Oboth noted that these finalized leadership placements enable the house to fully execute its constitutional mandate.
"With the Parliamentary Commission, committees and parliamentary representatives to various parliamentary bodies in place, the 12th Parliament can now commence its work in earnest," the Speaker said.
He congratulated the successful appointees while offering reassurance to those who missed out on leadership roles.
"I want to comfort those who did not make it through, that there is hope," Oboth said.
The Speaker also issued procedural guidance regarding the Auditor General’s annual report for the financial year ended December 31, 2025.
He endorsed a timeline agreement reached by the Leader of Opposition, Government Chief Whip, Chief Opposition Whip, and the Attorney General.
The leadership block resolved that the six-month statutory review period for the report will commence immediately after its formal re-laying before the house.
Separately, the Speaker announced the passing of former Bwamba Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Ngilisi Kosiya. Kosiya served in Uganda’s pioneering first Parliament from 1962 to 1971.
The Speaker described the late legislator as a foundational pillar of Uganda's legislative history.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Tooro.
The house then observed a moment of silence to honor the fallen pioneering lawmaker.
