A growing number of Ugandans, including opposition supporters, NRM loyalists, activists, journalists and lawmakers, have welcomed the ongoing corruption probe into former Speaker Anita Among following a series of high-profile raids and seizures linked to the investigation.
Many took to social media to celebrate and share information about the investigations that have seen security teams raid her luxurious properties in leafy suburbs like Nakasero, Kigo and Ntinda. Security operatives, led by CID, have seized several of her assets, including posh rides like the recently acquired multimillion-dollar Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover, as part of the probe into alleged corruption and abuse of public funds.
Shortly after the launch of the sweeping probe, the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said a new operation dubbed Maliza Ufisadi, which translates to End Corruption, had been launched and would spare no one. President Yoweri Museveni commissioned the operation, according to the CDF. During his swearing-in speech, Museveni vowed to fight corruption and said his government would not tolerate theft of public resources.
The raids and seizures have triggered widespread debate, with many openly celebrating the probe through social media and other news platforms.
Marvin Saasi, the National Unity Platform Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, wrote: “I can't describe the satisfaction as I see the convoy of exhibits, including the 'rose rose,' driving slowly along the Expressway heading away from a woman who once thought she was everything.”
Self-styled former “Ugandans on Twitter president” Gideon Nova Kwikiriza also commented: “But who is not happy about Among’s downfall? Looks like even those who seemed very close to her are all also celebrating.”
NBS Television journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala observed: “The chants of Hosanna as the Rolls Royce toured the city were quite telling.”
Lawyer Silver Kayondo linked the public reaction to growing frustration over corruption.
“Jubilation of boda-boda cyclists as impounded Rolls Royce & Range Rover were towed through town is voice of the barefoot taxpayer. They pay taxes on the boda, fuel, data, spare parts, permits, stage fees, interest on asset loans (bodas, phone, solar panels, etc). Respect citizens,” he posted.
Kayondo later added: “If it is discovered the money AAA & her people have been playing with are the loans govt has been borrowing, they shouldn't go criminal. Do civil forfeiture, attach everything, have URA initiate bankruptcy proceedings against them & close. Radical surgery without any anaesthesia.”
Civil society activist Agather Atuhaire posted documents showing that over Shs50 billion was lost through questionable parliamentary operations in less than a year.
“The money Among and her cronies stole in the 8 months between July 2025 and Feb 2026 is over UGX 50,000,000,000 ( about $13.5M),” she posted.
She added that the money was allegedly withdrawn directly from Bank of Uganda through parliamentary commission operations.
Aringa South County MP Yorke Odria Alioni called for wider investigations inside Parliament.
“The leadership of Anita Among illegally employed over 500 individuals at Parliament. We also want the offices of Human Resource, Finance and Communications at Parliament investigated,” he said.
Masindi District Woman MP also criticised Among’s leadership, saying: “If I ask what the Speaker has done in Parliament that we can point to and remember, there is nothing.”
Kagoma North MP Alex Brandon Kintu urged the former Speaker to reflect on the allegations.
“I urge the Rt. Hon. Speaker, as a Catholic and a friend of the Holy Land and the Vatican, to reflect. I hope she repents as the earthly proceedings continue,” he said.
Political analyst and activist Godwin Toko argued that Among had lost support from many groups, including politicians from Teso and women leaders.
“There's been no protest for Among: not from Teso, & no show of support and solidarity from Catholics, and women,” he posted.
National Unity Platform Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya also weighed in, saying: “some MPs who have been campaigning and making endorsement videos are now on TVs exposing some of the crimes we didn't even know about?”
Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura said she believed investigators had not yet uncovered the full extent of Among’s wealth.
“I believe Anita’s publicly known assets represent only a small fraction of her true wealth. All corrupt individuals always conceal their illicit gains. N’how we are watching every episode of the movie,” she posted.
Activist and cartoonist Jim Spire Ssentongo questioned several aspects of Among’s background.
“Do they also want to find out HOW she got her Law degree and from where?” he posted, before adding in another message: “Suddenly Among hardly has any defenders.”
Sports journalist Brian Kawalya also dropped a bombshell on X.
“This year’s finalists in the Secondary Schools Boys’ Football Championship (USSSA) are Bukedea Comprehensive School and Amus College,” he posted, noting that Bukedea Comprehensive belongs to Among while Amus College is linked to her uncle Patrick Isiagi.
NTV presenter Dagy Nyce suggested the anti-corruption operation could boost the political standing of Gen Kainerugaba.
“UNPOPULAR OPINION: If the CDF runs about NINE more operations of this kind on the BIG FISH, it can easily accumulate him a lot of CREDIT to become the next PRESIDENT on MERIT,” he posted.
Among has since withdrawn from the speakership race for the 12th Parliament and pledged to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations.
