Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU XI) have been awarded medals for their service in securing United Nations premises and supporting peace and stability in Somalia.

The medals were presented by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Somalia, James Swan, during a ceremony at the UNGU premises in Mogadishu. He commended the Ugandan contingent for their professionalism and dedication to safeguarding UN facilities, enabling the organisation to fulfil its mandate.

“The decoration you receive today reflects your commitment to security, and because you are here, we can do our work,” Mr. Swan stated.

He also praised the contribution of female peacekeepers, recognising their resilience and commitment to global peace and security.

The Force Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, praised the recipients for their exceptional performance during their tour of duty.

“Medals are not given to everyone in service, but are awarded for exemplary and exceptional performance. You are receiving them for the great job you’ve done,” he said.

UNGU XI Commander Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye expressed gratitude to the United Nations and partner organisations for the opportunity to serve, recognising the resilience of the troops throughout their tour of duty.

“Today’s medal award ceremony is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment shown by the personnel, represented here by just a few,” he noted.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Defence Attaché at the Ugandan Embassy Brig Gen Francis Chemengich Chemo, AUSSOM Sector One Commander Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja, AUSSOM Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu, Principal Security Advisor Joseph Katuramu, Chief PREMSEC Pathou Gangale, and Somali community representative Mama Halima, among others.
