UPDF Dismisses Bobi Wine Pre-Election Arrest Claims as 'Smokescreen'

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has dismissed allegations that security agencies intend to arrest National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, ahead of the election.

Responding to the candidate's claim on social media platform X, the acting UPDF spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi, issued a statement refuting the claims.

“The interagency security services can categorically state that there are no such plans whatsoever to arrest Mr. Kyagulanyi at this point—unless, of course, he offends the law,” Col. Magezi stated.

He characterized Kyagulanyi's assertion as “empty talk” and questioned its motive and timing.

“This is certainly a smokescreen. What is NUP and their leader planning by coming up with this type of empty talk?” Col. Magezi wondered.

While denying any current plans for arrest, the UPDF spokesperson emphasized that security forces remain vigilant. He noted that they are “watching closely” and “will be ready to take appropriate action if needed.”

The statement follows a post by Bobi Wine on X, in which he alleged a plot by security forces to detain him before polling day.
