Makerere University has handed over land for the construction of training facilities ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first phase in the development of the institution’s stadium.

The handover was conducted by the Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS), who formally transferred the site to the UPDF Engineers Brigade, the contractor for the project.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe welcomed the development and thanked government and NCS for prioritising investment in sports infrastructure that will benefit young people.

“I thank the Government and the NCS for this investment in our youth,” Prof. Nawangwe said.

The project forms part of Uganda’s wider preparations to co-host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

University officials said the development of the training grounds is expected to strengthen Makerere’s sports capacity while contributing to national readiness for the continental showpiece.

AFCON 2027 will be jointly staged by the three East African nations in what leaders have described as a milestone for regional cooperation and sports development.
