President Yoweri Museveni has today flagged off Uganda's first shipment of milk powder to Algeria.
The development follows his visit to Algeria in March 2023, during which he discussed Algeria’s interest in importing Ugandan milk with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
"I am, therefore, happy to see the first shipment of whole powdered milk, starting with an initial batch of 500 tonnes valued at $8 million," Museveni posted on X.
In January this year, President Museveni met Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, on the sidelines of the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The meeting aimed to strengthen trade relations and discuss continental business challenges.
During that meeting, Minister Cherfa delivered a special message from President Tebboune, noting that Algeria had started importing Ugandan coffee. He also acknowledged some earlier challenges with importing milk from Uganda, which, based on today’s development, seem to have been resolved.
